Set (And Actually Achieve) Better Goals
FEELING LIKE YOU’RE RUNNING A MARATHON IN QUICKSAND?
We’ve been there. We’re working our aS$es off and we aren’t making a lot of progress. Why? Because we never set personal goals and create the conditions for ourselves to achieve them.
Before we get started, you can receive a FREE Goal Getter Worksheet that accompanies this post subscribe to our newsletter now!
A CLEAR GOAL SETTING PROCESS allows for us to consider and confirm what we want out of life. By driving clarity around what “this is all in service of” eliminates activities that are not in service of the bigger picture.
WRITE A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT. What’s important to you? What are you grateful for? What are you doing when you feel your best? What does your ideal day look like? What makes you different from other people? Take time to reflect on your future- who you want to become and what kind of life you want to live. Journaling is recommended over the course of a few days to really hone in on what is important.
LIFE GOALS MEAN THINKING BIG. What is your single most important lifetime goal? If its as big as it should be, it will probably take at least 10 years to achieve. Do you want to become the first female president? Send your child to an Ivy League College with no loans? Own a successful business? Become besties with Ellen? (Move over Jen). Think bigger than you’ve ever imagine and do not (I repeat DO NOT) sell yourself short. Your dreams can and should be as big as you want to make them. A few categories that may be of most importance to you are career, financial, family, physical, mental or attitude.
ESTABLISH GLIDEPATH GOALS THAT LADDER UP TO YOUR LIFE GOAL. What are the targets along the way that support your dream? Identifying core project milestones along the way can help us identify tangible achievements that acknowledge progress and keep us focused along our journey. Using the S.M.A.R.T. goals framework (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based goals) you will be more decisive on what steps really need to be taken to move the proverbial ball forward.
Let’s say you want to own a million-dollar jewelry business. That can seem incredibly daunting, but we always believe that success starts with decision, so congratulations! You could have started any business, but you’ve decided on the fashion industry. Now come the questions- what are your brand building fundamentals? What are your margins? How will you produce? Where will you sell? As you grow, do you want your channel strategy to shift from Etsy to Direct to Consumer to Amazon to premium jeweler partner or Walmart?
All of these questions need answers- but not all at once! By laying them all out there, you can prioritize and tackle one at a time, avoiding overwhelm and early burnout. Really, you’ll need a clear business plan and mentors in the industry to help you along the way (trust me, people are willing to help!)
COMMIT TO A DAILY TO-DO LIST. How do you best maintain accountability? We recommend managing a highly that we keep this list highly visible and visit it each day. Our days can become cluttered with “activity” but when our head hits the pillow we realize we haven’t made a lot of progress.
CELEBRATE THE MICRO WINS ALONG THE WAY! When we’re seeking to build our dream life we can become distracted by perceived lack of progress due to our benchmark being those who have already achieved greatness. In reality, you too have achieved more than most- celebrate even the smallest of milestones, showing gratitude for your persistence towards success. Celebrating the wins will help your psyche get through the inevitable tough times through this process and keep a positive mental attitude towards the journey.
We want to hear about your micro wins and celebrate with you. Tag us on Instagram @wisewellnessguild using the hashtag #glidepathtogreatness and we may feature you on our page!
